    １９３５年５月１６日，由著名剧作家田汉作词、中国新音乐运动的创始人聂耳作曲的《义勇军进行曲》发表。这首歌原为电影《风云儿女》的主题歌。在新中国成立前夕，人民政协开会商讨国歌时，著名画家徐悲鸿和著名建筑学家梁思成委员力荐《义勇军进行曲》作为国歌。毛泽东、周恩来当即表示支持他们的意见。１９４９年９月２７日，全国政协第一届全体会议通过决议，在中华人民共和国国歌正式制定前，以《义勇军进行曲》为国歌。２００４年３月１４日，十届全国人大二次会议通过宪法修正案，规定“中华人民共和国国歌是《义勇军进行曲》”。
